Before you begin your Alabama road trip, make sure your auto insurance policy is up to date, and reacquaint yourself with the state’s rules of the road. Then you’ll be ready to head out and enjoy Alabama’s sandy beaches, beautiful state parks, and historical attractions.

What’s required of all car drivers in Alabama?

With limited exceptions, to operate a motor vehicle as an Alabama resident, you must be at least 16 years old and have a driver’s license. Before applying for an Alabama driver license, you need to have a learner permit for a minimum of six months, and you’ll need to provide the following prior to your driver’s license test:

  • Proof of high school enrollment or graduation (if you’re under 19 and obtaining your first driver’s license)

  • Social Security card

  • One form of primary identification

  • A driver license fee

What are the minimum car insurance requirements in Alabama

In Alabama, you’re required to show proof of auto insurance when you register your vehicle. Here are the minimum car insurance limits you need in Alabama:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per accident and $25,000 per person

  • Property damage liability: $25,000 per accident

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury liability: $50,000 per accident and $25,000 per person

    • Note: You can reject uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury liability coverage. If you have questions, talk to your agent as you review your policy.

If you’re involved in an accident and your losses exceed your policy’s limits, you may be responsible for paying the remainder out of pocket. To help minimize this risk, consider purchasing higher limits of the coverages listed above, and also assessing whether additional optional coverages may make sense for you.

Are optional car insurance coverages available in Alabama?

Yes. While these coverages aren’t necessary for vehicle registration and other legal requirements, they can help protect you and your car in the event of an accident or roadside issue. Here are some liability coverage and collision coverage options available in Alabama.

Comprehensive coverage:

Comprehensive coverage can help pay for losses if your vehicle is damaged by something other than a collision with another vehicle—for example, theft and vandalism, hitting an animal, and hail or tornado damage.

Collision coverage:

If your vehicle is damaged in a collision with another vehicle, this coverage will come into effect.

Car loan protection:

This optional coverage can apply if your vehicle is deemed to be totaled. It covers the greater of your actual cash value or the amount you still owe.

Rental car reimbursement:

If your car is damaged and needs to spend some time in the shop, this coverage can help pay for a rental so you can still get around while your car gets fixed.

Roadside assistance:

Roadside assistance helps pay for towing expenses, battery jumps, flat tire fixes, and other on-the-road issues.
