Before you hit the road or take in the rugged Cascade Mountains, make sure your motorcycle insurance policy has you covered, and familiarize yourself with Oregon’s rules of the road.

What’s required of all motorcycle riders in Oregon?

To legally operate your motorcycle in Oregon, you’ll need to be 16 or older, have a valid driver’s license, and obtain a motorcycle endorsement on your license. Once you’ve completed that process and are ready to ride, be sure to follow state motorcycle laws, including:

  • Helmets: All motorcycle operators and passengers are required to wear helmets.

  • Lights: Your motorcycle must have at least one white headlight, but no more than three. It also needs at least one red brake light and two front turn signal lights.

  • Mirrors: Your motorcycle must have at least one rear-view mirror.

  • Lane splitting: Lane splitting is illegal, as are any other maneuvers that involve sharing lanes or weaving between vehicles.

What are the motorcycle insurance requirements in Oregon?

As a motorcycle rider in Oregon, you’re required to carry bodily injury liability, property damage liability, and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverages. Here are the minimum motorcycle insurance coverages to legally ride in Oregon:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury liability

  • $50,000 for two or more persons for bodily injury liability

  • $20,000 for property damage liability

UM coverages:

  • $25,000 per person for bodily injury

  • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury

If you’re involved in an accident in which the losses exceed these limits, you could be responsible for paying the remainder out of pocket. Choosing higher motorcycle insurance limits can help protect you and your assets in these situations.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach has been named one of America’s best beach towns by National Geographic, and it’s easy to see why.
