A motorcyclist’s guide to the Tomahawk Fall Ride

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Tomahawk Fall Ride, an annual celebration of motorcycling during fall in the scenic northwoods of Wisconsin. Like all great rallies that span the decades, the Tomahawk Fall Ride had a humble beginning.

A brief history

In 1981, fewer than 20 riders gathered in Tomahawk, Wisconsin for a ride through Wisconsin’s northwoods, a region that attracts vacationers from Chicago and beyond. Among that group was Willie G. Davidson, but this was not a Motor Company sponsored event. Two years later, Harley-Davidson and the Harley Owners Group got involved and the event began to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). By the end of the decade, the event drew 5,000 attendees annually and donated almost $10,000 to the MDA.

Multiple locations and so much to do

The event—held this year from September 14–18—has continued to grow over the years and now is too big to fit in one location. And while Harley-Davidson is not the official sponsor, the company, which has a manufacturing plant in Tomahawk, does offer up activities. Across the five-day event, there’s lots to do and scenic backroads to ride between venues.

Here’s a quick overview:

This all started as a fall ride through the northwoods of Wisconsin and with good reason. The northern part of Wisconsin is a land of great natural beauty offering almost unlimited riding opportunities. Fall is perhaps the best time to experience the region. Warm days and cool nights with colorful foliage unfolding before your eyes makes for rides you will remember all winter long.
