Since 1940, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has been a destination for motorcycle riders. For 2017, the Myrtle Beach Bike Week Spring Rally—to be held May 12–21—will be a 2017 AMA National Gypsy Tour series event.

The rally has changed over the years. Once concentrated in Myrtle Beach and Horry County, now the rally has spread over a wider region, with events at locations too numerous to list. Today, the rally is truly as big as The Grand Strand.

The Grand Strand

The Grand Strand is 60 miles of almost uninterrupted beach along the South Carolina coast. It forms an arc from the Georgetown area in the south, up the coast to the Little River near the North Carolina state line. You can find just about every type of oceanside attraction and amusement on this stretch, along with some preserved areas, such as Huntington Beach State Park, south of Murrells Inlet.

The coastal region of South Carolina is usually sub-tropical and humid during the spring rally. Late May has daytime average high temperatures reaching the upper 80s and nighttime average low temperatures dipping to the upper 60s.

With ocean breezes and abundant sunshine, it's perfect motorcycle riding weather. Pack your sunscreen. Also, pack rain gear, as the region averages more than 3 inches of rain in May. You will likely get some refreshing rain at some point during the rally.

The weather and atmosphere adds up to a perfect spring tonic for winter-weary motorcyclists, and a great way to acclimate to riding in the coming summer heat.

A riders' rally

With events spread across 10 days at venues up and down the coast, and inland, too, this is truly a riders' rally.

You can choose to stay in Myrtle Beach proper, which has more than 89,000 units to accommodate the more than 14.6 million annual visitors. Or you can find a place that is less hectic. Whatever you prefer, booking early is always wise. The rally draws more than 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts annually, in addition to the beach tourists, so traffic can get heavy in places.

You'll find all the usual rally features here, from bike shows and bands, to various contests and burnout pits. And there are vendors galore. South Carolina also offers the thing we love the most—riding opportunities. The coastal areas and numerous historic sites are perfect for exploring on your motorcycle.
