Where the forest meets the surf, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area offers an off-road playground of towering sand dunes, forested trails, and wide-open beach access. Stretching along Oregon’s coast, it’s a prime destination for ATV riders of all experience levels.

What you’ll need before you ride

To ride legally and safely in the Oregon Dunes, Oregon requires a few essentials:

  • An ATV Operating Permit—$10 and valid for two years.

  • A safety flag—Must be orange or red and extend at least 9 feet above the ground.

  • A spark arrester and compliant muffler—Your ATV must meet the 93 dB noise limit.

  • An ATV Safety Education Card—Free online course at RideATVOregon.org. Riders under 16 also need hands-on training.

Maps and resources for OHV riders

The U.S. Forest Service offers downloadable maps for each OHV riding zone in the Oregon Dunes. The maps highlight designated routes, staging areas, sand campsites, and areas with seasonal restrictions. You can also download geospatial PDFs (GeoPDFs) and track your location using a GPS-enabled mobile app like Avenza Maps. For updates and route planning, visit the Siuslaw National Forest website.

Year-round access and seasonal updates

The Oregon Dunes are open year-round, but conditions can change quickly. Fog, coastal winds, and shifting sands mean no two days—or rides—are exactly the same.

Some areas may close temporarily from March 15 to September 15 to protect the nesting grounds of the western snowy plover. These closures affect only small sections, but it’s important to check trail status before you ride.

Navigating the dunes—ATV safety tips

Riding the dunes is unforgettable—but it comes with distinct challenges. Staying alert and riding within your skill level can help keep you safe during your adventure.

Here are some top safety must-knows for riding the dunes:

Accentuated thumbs up hand

Check your gear

Make sure your ATV is in top shape and equipped with a spark arrester. Bring the required safety gear—flag, fire extinguisher, lights, and helmet.

Off-road hand protection

Wear protective clothing

Sand can sting and blind. Essential gear includes goggles, gloves, long sleeves, pants, and boots.

Red waving flag

Stay visible and alert

Your safety flag must be orange or red and stand at least 9 feet high. It helps other riders see you across dunes and shifting terrain. Stay alert for other riders, wildlife, and changing sand conditions.

Rocky ground with pebbles

Know the terrain

Watch for razorbacks (sharp ridges with steep drop-offs) and witch’s eyes (deep, hard-to-see sand pockets). Take on dunes at an angle and ride at a pace that lets you react safely.

Open eye

Supervise youth riders

Riders under 16 must use age-appropriate machines, wear a helmet that meets DOT or SNELL standards, and be supervised by an adult with a valid Safety Card.

Wooden arrows for directions

Stick to the routes

Designated trails exist for a reason—to help you avoid closed areas, protect sensitive terrain, and steer clear of collisions with other riders.

Person on ATV

Ride smart

Use a spotter for jumps or steep climbs and keep your speed in check. Staying in control helps prevent accidents and keeps everyone safer on the dunes.
