The full route is typically open to motorcyclists from late May through early November. Monte Cristo Peak—the highest point on the byway—closes for the winter months (December through April). If you’re riding during that time, you can still adjust your route through Huntsville.
While the lower section stays open year-round, prime riding conditions run from late May through early October. Here’s a quick look at Ogden temps:

From rugged canyon curves to small-town charm, this ride offers more than just great pavement, so consider setting aside time to explore a few local favorites.
Ogden has a long history as a railroad town—and it still carries that no-nonsense, working-town energy. Before heading into the mountains, stop along Historic 25th Street—lined with restaurants, galleries, and classic brick buildings. It’s your last major service stop for food, fuel, or a quick gear check before the climb.
Here are a couple local favorites to check out:
The Bickering Sisters: A laid-back breakfast and brunch spot with a local following.
Timbermine Steakhouse: Equal parts steakhouse and time capsule—this quirky log cabin is packed with hearty meals, old mining gear, and Western flair.
Pineview Reservoir offers a scenic pause mid-ride. It’s especially popular in the summer for boating, fishing, and lounging lakeside—but you’ll also find quiet spots to relax, enjoy the views, or cool off near the water.
Free public beaches: Windsurfer Beach, North Arm, and Spring Creek offer free access and restrooms.
Marinas and campsites: For a small fee, check out Port Ramp Marina, Middle Inlet, Cemetery Point, and Anderson Cove for day use or overnight stays.
In Huntsville, the Shooting Star Saloon claims to be the oldest continuously operating saloon in Utah. It’s a favorite stop for the world-famous Star Burger, walls packed with eclectic décor, and history dating back to 1879.
While you’re in town, check out the Compass Rose Lodge Observatory—a great stop if you enjoy astronomy. And if you’re up for a short detour, head less than six miles to Eden, a small lakeside town with access to the scenic Brim Trail for a post-ride hike.
The Ogden River Scenic Byway is fully paved and generally safe riders. Still, it’s smart to keep a few things in mind:
Take it easy on the curves: Ogden Canyon and Monte Cristo Road feature tight turns and steep climbs—ride steady and stay alert.
Be altitude-aware: Monte Cristo Peak tops 9,000 feet, and weather can shift fast at higher elevations.
Dress in layers: Even in summer, mornings can be chilly. Bring gear for wind and rain.
Watch for fall traffic: Autumn brings out more drivers and riders looking for peak foliage views.
Ride your ride: This route is paved and scenic—but your comfort, confidence, and visibility come first.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure to meet Utah’s motorcycle insurance requirements before riding the Ogden River Scenic Byway. Most states, including Utah, require liability coverage for both bodily injury and property damage.
