Standard auto coverages

In many states, you’re required to carry several of these vehicle coverages—most frequently liability insurance. In some cases, if you don’t want some of these insurance coverages on your policy, you may be able to reject them in writing.

Bodily injury liability

Bodily injury liability insurance can help financially protect you against expenses and damages a person might claim against you due to injuries they sustain in an auto accident you cause.

Property damage liability

Property damage liability insurance can help you pay repair costs for damage you cause to another person’s vehicle or property in a covered accident where you’re at fault.

Uninsured motorist

Imagine driving along and you’re hit by a driver who doesn’t have insurance. Uninsured motorists coverage may pay to treat your injuries if the other driver is at fault, or if it’s a hit-and-run. Property damage is also covered in some states where uninsured motorist property damage coverage is available.

Underinsured motorist

What happens if you’re in a crash that’s not your fault, and the other person’s insurance isn’t enough to cover the cost of your injuries? If it’s available in your state, underinsured motorists insurance coverage may help pay for your recovery. And in some states, it can also pay for property damage.

Physical damage

Physical damage coverage is optional in most states, and can help pay for repairs to your own vehicle, regardless of fault. In most cases, we offer two types of physical damage coverage: collision and comprehensive.

Collision

Collision auto coverage can help pay for the damage to your vehicle after it hits another vehicle—no matter who’s at fault in a covered accident.

Comprehensive

Sometimes referred to as “other than collision,” comprehensive insurance coverage may help pay for damage to your vehicle from things like fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and falling objects.

Specialty auto insurance coverages

These coverages may not be available in all states. If they’re available in your state, they may be required or optional—review your state’s auto insurance requirements to be sure, and be sure to discuss your options with your agent.

Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance coverage

In a covered accident, this pays for reasonable and necessary medical expenses for injuries to the driver and any passenger in your vehicle, regardless of who is at fault in the accident. In addition, there may be coverage available for lost wages, lost services and funeral expenses. Not allowed in all states.

Medical payments

Medical bills can add up after an accident. Medical Payments insurance coverage could pay for reasonable and necessary medical expenses for the driver and passengers in your vehicle. It also covers funeral expenses. This coverage applies no matter who’s at fault in a covered accident.

Rental reimbursement

The good news is your car is being repaired due to a covered loss. The bad? You have no way to get to work. Rental reimbursement coverage could give you money towards a rental to keep your life moving.

Lienholder

If you’re buying or leasing a vehicle, the lender may require you to carry specific coverages. Insurance options available in your state—like car loan protection or lienholder deductible—may offer additional coverage. These options can help if your car is totaled before it’s paid off, or if you need a lower deductible and still want to save money.
