Sunshine, beaches, and a vibrant culture—Florida has it all. But to fully enjoy the Sunshine State, you need car insurance that meets state requirements.

We’re happy to offer cheap car insurance to Florida drivers like you.

How much is car insurance in Florida?

The average cost of car insurance in Florida is $2,208 per year, or $184 per month.* Of course, that’s the average—your car insurance costs can vary based on your driving record, vehicle, coverage selections, and discounts.

We offer options for every budget, including:

  • Low down payment options

  • Flexible payment plans

  • 6-month or annual policy terms

What are the minimum Florida state insurance requirements?

Insurance helps cover costs related to accidents you’re fully or partially at fault for. In Florida, you’re required to carry the following minimum limits for coverage:

Bodily injury liability insurance in Florida

Florida law requires insurance companies to offer bodily injury liability coverage, but drivers can reject this coverage in writing. Bodily injury liability insurance covers medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering for others if you cause an accident.

If you carry this coverage, the minimum limits are:

  • $10,000 bodily injury liability per person

  • $20,000 bodily injury liability per accident

Holding the minimum amount of coverage can help keep you legal, but keep in mind it may not fully cover your costs if you get into an accident. Higher coverage limits can help protect you. Florida’s maximum limits for bodily injury liability are:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person

  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident

Uninsured motorist (UM) bodily injury coverage in Florida

Your insurance company is required to offer uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage in Florida, but—like bodily injury liability—you can reject it in writing. That said, we recommend keeping this coverage on your policy, as it can help protect you financially if you’re injured in an accident where the at-fault driver is uninsured.

Optional car insurance coverages in Florida

While not required, these coverages can help reduce your risk of significant out-of-pocket expenses following a covered incident:

Collision and comprehensive

Collision coverage can help pay for repairs or replacement of your car if you get into an accident with another vehicle or object. Comprehensive, meanwhile, can help pay for repairs or replacement if your vehicle is damaged by something other than a collision—for example:

  • Fire

  • Theft

  • Vandalism

  • Certain weather events, like hailstorms and hurricanes

Medical payments

Medical payments coverage can help pay for medical expenses for you and your passengers after a covered accident, regardless of fault.

Roadside assistance

Our roadside assistance coverage offers 24/7 emergency towing and roadside service if you experience a mechanical or electrical breakdown, you run out of gas, you have a flat tire, or other covered situations.

Rental reimbursement

If your car is being repaired due to a covered incident, rental reimbursement can help pay for a rental vehicle in the meantime.

Florida SR22 insurance

As a Florida resident, if you have certain driving infractions on your record—such as reckless driving—you may be required to obtain an SR22.

An SR22 is not a type of insurance, but rather a certificate filed by your insurance company to prove that you carry the state-mandated minimum liability coverage.

To obtain an SR22 in Florida, you'll typically need to:

  1. Contact your insurance provider to request an SR22 filing.

  2. Pay any required fees for the SR22.

  3. Maintain continuous insurance coverage for the duration of the SR22 requirement, which is usually three years.

If you’re a Dairyland® customer and you need an SR22 in Florida, we can file it on your behalf—at no additional cost.

Keep in mind: If you let your insurance lapse during the SR22 period, your insurance company is required to notify the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This could result in the suspension of your driver's license and additional fines or penalties.

FR-44 insurance in Florida

Florida is one of two states that require FR-44 forms for certain infractions. In Florida, if you receive a DUI, you’ll likely need to purchase an FR-44. Like an SR22, an FR-44 isn’t a type of car insurance—instead, it’s a document that proves you meet the state’s car insurance requirements.

FR-2 forms in Florida

While many states require SR22s for drivers who receive a violation for driving without insurance and/or driving with a suspended license, Florida is unique in that it requires an FR-2 form instead.
