Arkansas Dragon full route map

This guide covers the entire 59-mile scenic route—not just the shorter 19-mile Dragon Tail. Expect about 90 minutes of ride time without stops. Use the interactive map to help you plan fuel breaks, food stops, and scenic detours along the way.

Best time to ride the Arkansas Dragon

Most motorcyclists take on the Dragon between April and October—after the snow is gone but before winter sets back in. Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are especially popular for their mild weather and stunning scenery.

To help with trip planning, here are the average monthly temperatures from Kingston, Arkansas—about 15 miles east of the route and a good indicator of the riding conditions you can expect.

Tips for staying safe on the Arkansas Dragon

Along with its sharp curves, AR-123 is known for its steep grades and narrow passages. Which is why large trucks aren’t allowed on this road. Those twists and turns are part of what makes the ride exciting, but they also demand focus. That’s why it’s important to keep these safety tips in mind:

Group of bikers

Ride within your skill level

The Arkansas Dragon is technical—don’t push harder than you’re comfortable with. Keep a pace that feels safe for you.

Motorcycle tire on road

Use caution on blind curves and switchbacks

The road has sharp turns and limited visibility. Enter curves at a controlled speed and stay in your lane.

Green hills

Watch for steep grades and narrow passages

Downhill stretches can build speed quickly. Use both brakes smoothly and keep extra space from vehicles ahead.

Sun and storm cloud

Check road and weather conditions

Rain, fog, or fallen leaves can make curves more challenging. Plan ahead and avoid riding in poor visibility when possible.

Gas pump

Fuel up before the ride

Services are limited along AR-123. Make sure you start with a full tank and know your stops.

Deer with antlers

Stay alert for wildlife and other riders

Deer and smaller animals often cross the road unexpectedly—and the curves can limit your view of oncoming traffic.

Open modular helmet

Gear up for protection

Helmet, gloves, boots, and protective clothing can help reduce risk on technical roads like this.

Top stops and scenic breaks along the route

There are several towns and rest stops throughout this stretch with plenty of food, gas, and restrooms along the way. However, it's usually a good idea to fuel up when you have the opportunity in areas you're not familiar with.

If you're looking for a quick bite to eat, the Ozark Cafe in Jasper is a popular destination for motorcyclists seeking hearty portions of their favorite comfort foods inside a unique historical building. Previous guests note that the burgers are especially worth trying along with the fried mushrooms and chicken fried steak.

To further enhance your experience, here are a few other stops to consider adding to your route.

  • Buffalo National River at the Carver campground
AR123 crosses the Buffalo National River near the Carver campground, a scenic spot maintained by the National Park Service. It offers a peaceful riverside rest or photo opportunity midride.

  • Historic Mt. Judea area
The road climbs through Mt. Judea, a small Ozark village. Here, you can pick up some handmade souvenirs at the Mt. Judea Mercantile or grab a quick bite at Kent’s General Store.

  • Hagarville / Kingston

While not directly on AR123, these nearby towns are close to the route and offer convenient spots for refueling, food, or a short diversion to explore.

  • Sam’s Throne

Just a few miles past Mt. Judea lies Sam's Throne—a favorite among hikers, campers, and climbers. For bikers who want to stretch their legs, it’s about a two-mile hike around the rock formation.

  • Ponca Nature Center

At the Ponca Nature Center you can learn more about the elk that roam the area and get tips for viewing them in Boxley Valley. There is also a trail and plenty of seating areas making it a great stop for a picnic lunch.
