Effective July 1, 2025, North Carolina will raise its minimum auto and motorcycle liability insurance requirements for the first time in years. These changes, intended to provide stronger financial protection for accident victims, will impact both bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage.

What are North Carolina’s new insurance limits?

Here’s how the minimum coverage amounts will increase:

  • Bodily Injury liability (per person): From $30,000 to $50,000

  • Bodily Injury liability (per accident): From $60,000 to $100,000

  • Property Damage liability: From $25,000 to $50,000

  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist bodily injury (per person): From $30,000 to $50,000

  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist bodily injury (per accident): From $60,000 to $100,000

  • Uninsured motorist property damage (per accident): From $25,000 to $50,000

With the rising costs of medical expenses and vehicle repairs, these increases help ensure coverage amounts are sufficient in the event of a serious accident.

Why your premiums might be higher

The increased limits are part of Senate Bill 452, introduced to improve financial protections for individuals injured in traffic accidents. While the increase offers stronger coverage, it may also lead to higher insurance premiums for many North Carolina drivers.

Insurance providers are adjusting their rates to account for the higher risk exposure tied to increased minimum payouts. Additionally, the rising costs of healthcare and vehicle repairs have rendered the previous limits insufficient, prompting the state to take action.
