Michigan motorcycle insurance

Michigan is home to some of the most picturesque motorcycle routes in the country. Nicknamed the Great Lakes State because it sits perfectly between four of the Great Lakes, Michigan features more than 3,200 miles of shoreline—more than California and Florida, and second only to Alaska.

Along with picturesque shorelines, there are many attractions to visit throughout the state, including amusement parks, lighthouses, wineries, breweries, and museums. Just make sure you’re covered with the right motorcycle insurance before you begin your ride.

What is required of all motorcycle riders in Michigan?

The Michigan Department of Insurance states the following:

Anyone operating a motorcycle in Michigan must purchase liability coverage through a licensed insurer. Motorcycle insurance is not the same as the no-fault (PIP) benefits Michigan residents must buy to operate an automobile. Motorcycles are specifically excluded as a motor vehicle under Michigan's no-fault law. They are not entitled to no-fault benefits except in certain circumstances.

In Michigan, a motorcycle is defined as a vehicle with a saddle or seat, no more than three wheels, and a motor that exceeds 50cc. This definition doesn’t include mopeds or off-road vehicles.

Michigan motorcycle helmet law requirements

Under Michigan law, a rider must wear a helmet unless they have at least $20,000 in medical benefits coverage.

What are the minimum motorcycle insurance requirements in Michigan?

You must meet these minimum requirements to ride legally in Michigan:

  • $50,000 for an accident in which a person is injured/killed
  • $100,000 for an accident in which several people are injured/killed
  • $10,000 for property damage

Because an accident can yield greater costs than minimum insurance coverage provides, you may be forced to pay out of pocket for a loss. Choosing to carry higher limits can help protect you and those around you.

You can choose from several optional coverages beyond minimum liability coverage, including:

  • Roadside assistance, which provides 24/7 assistance if you need repairs, supplies, or towing services out on the road
  • Diminishing deductible, in which your deductible decreases over time when you maintain a safe driving record
  • Comprehensive and collision, which can protect you financially if your bike is damaged
  • Equipment coverage for bike customizations
  • Physical damage plus, which guarantees original equipment manufacturer parts used for repairs, as well as the replacement cost of optional equipment in the event of a total loss
