New Jersey offers a plethora of scenic locations for bikers, but before you wind your way along Skyline Drive, you'll need a motorcycle insurance policy that meets the state’s minimum legal requirements. You’ll want to be familiar with the motorcycle laws in The Garden State, too.

What’s required of all motorcycle riders in New Jersey?

To ride a motorcycle in New Jersey, you must be at least 17 years old and have either a motorcycle endorsement on your driver’s license or a separate motorcycle license. Beyond license requirements, here are some other rules of the road you should know:

  • Helmets: All motorcycle drivers and passengers must wear a DOT-approved helmet. It’s a good idea to find the type of helmet that works best for you.

  • Eye protection: You’re required to wear approved goggles or a face shield unless your bike has a windscreen.

  • Handlebars: The handlebars on your motorcycle cannot be higher than your shoulders when you’re seated.

  • Mirrors: Your motorcycle is required to have at least one rear-view mirror.

  • Horn: Motorcycles in New Jersey are required to have a working horn.

  • Lights:

    • One or two headlights

    • A taillight

    • A brake light

    • Turn signals

To increase your visibility to other motorists, your motorcycle must have:

  • Passengers: Passengers must have a proper seat, foot pegs, and wear the same types of protective equipment as the driver.

  • Lane splitting: Driving between lanes in slow-moving or stationary traffic is illegal.

Are optional motorcycle insurance coverages available in New Jersey?

Yes. The minimum state motorcycle requirements might not be enough to cover you in every situation, so we offer several optional coverages in New Jersey, including:

Comprehensive coverage

If your motorcycle is damaged by something other than a collision, comprehensive motorcycle insurance can help you pay for repairs and other costs. This coverage frequently applies following incidents like theft, vandalism, and weather events like hailstorms.

Collision coverage

When your motorcycle is involved in a collision with another vehicle or a stationary object—or even if it just tips over and is damaged—your collision coverage can help pay for the resulting costs of the damage.

Roadside assistance coverage

Stuck somewhere with a flat tire, an empty tank, or a dead battery? Roadside assistance coverage can bring you help when and where you need it most.

Special equipment coverage

If you’ve customized your motorcycle, you may want to consider coverage for accessories, since most policies only cover stock motorcycle parts.
