Ride Wyoming’s Chief Joseph Scenic Byway: Curves, peaks, and history

Also known as Wyoming Highway 296, the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway stretches about 46 miles between Cody and the Beartooth Highway (US 212). Allow at least two hours for the drive without stops, but plan for longer to enjoy overlooks, historical markers, and potential wildlife sightings.

Your ride starts about 17 miles north of Cody, at the intersection of highways WY-120 and WY-296. Cody makes a great pre-ride pit stop to fuel up, grab supplies, and check your gear.

After leaving Cody, gas stations are scarce along the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and the Beartooth Highway. The route crosses the Shoshone National Forest through the Absaroka Mountains to the Clarks Fork Valley. It's smart to top off your tank before starting the ride—especially if you're planning to continue into Montana.

The route ends at a T-intersection with the Beartooth Highway, near the northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. As you ride the byway, you’ll pass through some of Wyoming’s most breathtaking landscapes and historic sites, including:

• North Absaroka Wilderness

• Clark’s Fork Yellowstone River

For a longer loop, consider adding on the Beartooth Highway route to create a 160-mile loop. Start in Cody, ride the Chief Joseph north to US 212, and continue on the Beartooth toward Red Lodge, Montana. From there, circle back to Cody via US 120. Along this route, you’ll climb to one of the highest paved roads in the Rocky Mountains—featuring the iconic Top of the World Store.

The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway rewards riders with incredible views—but it demands your full attention. Here’s what to keep in mind before you ride:

• Understand the altitude: The byway reaches elevations above 8,000 feet. If you’re not used to higher altitudes, watch for signs of altitude sickness. Stay hydrated and take breaks as needed to stay comfortable.

• Gear up: Make sure you're equipped with the right gear—from a DOT-approved helmet to sturdy footwear and gloves. Given this route’s elevation changes, dress in layers and carry rain gear and cold-weather clothing.

• Stay sharp on switchbacks: This route features some dramatic curves. Stay focused, ride within your skill level, and keep an eye out for potential frost heaves or gravel—especially in the turns.

• Check ahead for construction: Road work can pop up, especially during the warmer months. Before you leave, check the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) website for current or planned construction that could cause slow traffic or uneven roadways.

• Watch for wildlife: Grizzlies, moose, and deer call this area home. Wildlife is most active around dawn and dusk, so stay vigilant and ride cautiously.
