What safety requirements apply to all motorcycle riders in Colorado?

The Colorado Department of Transportation states the following:

  • Eye protection: Riders must wear eye protection—either goggles or a visor that connects to the helmet.

  • Headlights and taillights: Headlights must produce a white light that projects 500 feet in front of your bike. Headlight use is required at night, but is optional during the day. Taillights are required after sunset.

  • Mirrors: At least one side-view mirror is required. Mirrors can be located on the left side, right side, or both.

  • Mufflers: Mufflers are required for all motorcycles.

  • Helmets: Helmets are required for riders age 17 and younger, and optional for riders 18 and older.

  • Safety inspections: Law enforcement officers can perform safety inspections on motorcycles at random, so keep your bike in working order.

What are the motorcycle insurance requirements in Colorado?

As a motorcycle owner, you need to meet the minimum motorcycle insurance coverage requirements to ride legally in Colorado:

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person

  • $50,000 bodily injury liability per accident

  • $15,000 property damage liability per accident

All other liability coverage is optional.

Because accident costs can exceed the minimum insurance coverage, you may be required to pay out of pocket for the loss. Choosing to carry higher limits can help protect you, other riders and motorists, and your bike.

Are optional motorcycle insurance coverages available in Colorado?

We have plenty of options to help protect you and your bike:

  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury: This coverage can help pay the cost of medical bills from any injury you suffer in an accident caused by the owner or operator of an uninsured vehicle.

  • Underinsured motorist bodily injury: If you’re involved in a collision and the other driver is underinsured, meaning their policy isn’t enough to cover your injuries, this policy may help provide injury protection—up to your policy limits—for you and your passengers.

  • Medical payments: This personal insurance helps cover medical care you or your passengers seek as a result of an accident. Your medical bills will be paid up to the amount of coverage you select.

Sights to see in Colorado

Colorado Scenic Byway: The San Juan Skyway

This 233-mile loop traverses the stunning San Juan Mountains, passing through evergreens and national forests and offering views of snow-kissed mountain tops, picturesque waterfalls, and history-steeped ghost towns. This route includes the famed Million Dollar Highway and thrilling Red Mountain Pass, between Silverton and Ouray. Just be careful if you're going south, because there are no guard rails!

Colorado Scenic Byway: Unaweep Tabeguache

Near the rocky ledges and grassy knolls of Whitewater, you may be lucky enough to spot desert bighorn sheep—and even if you don't see them, the views as you pass are worth it. And that's only one highlight during this 133-mile adventure. Also, make sure to leave plenty of time to admire the Unaweep Divide, a canyon in the Uncompahgre Plateau cut by two separate creeks, leaving a red dirt peninsula dotted by trees.

Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway

On this 82-mile route, you'll receive an unmatched view of the Rocky Mountains’ true majesty. At one point, you'll see five fourteeners—the term for mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation.

You'll also ride through legendary mountain towns like Aspen and Leadville, pass by lakes and creeks, and have the opportunity to visit several historic sites. Plus, you may get an extra rush just from the altitude, since this route averages around 9,000 feet in elevation.
