What types of motorcycles are covered?

Dairyland covers many types of motorcycles, including bikes from manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Honda®, and Indian®.* Covered models include:

  • Cruisers

  • Touring

  • Standard bikes

  • Sport touring

  • Choppers

  • Adventure touring

  • Sport bikes

  • Three-wheelers

Looking into other types of rides? Dairyland also offers coverage options for dirt bike, mopeds, and scooter. Riders exploring newer or less traditional options can also learn more about electric motorcycles and what an autocycle is.

Insurance costs can vary by motorcycle type, too. In general, lower-horsepower bikes, such as many standard motorcycles, may cost less to insure than higher-performance bikes, though rates depend on factors like the bike, rider, coverages, and location.

How much does motorcycle insurance cost?

Motorcycle insurance can start as low as $15 per month.** The cost of coverage depends on several factors, including:

  • Where you live

  • Your riding history

  • The coverages and limits you choose

  • Your deductible

A Dairyland representative can walk you through the details and help you review your options.

How to lower motorcycle insurance costs

If you’re looking for ways to lower motorcycle insurance costs, discounts may help. Savings and eligibility can vary by state, rider profile, and policy details. Examples may include:

  • Multi-cycle discount

  • Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) member discount

  • Home ownership discount

You may also be able to lower costs by:

  • Completing a rider training course

  • Choosing a higher deductible

  • Reviewing your coverages regularly

  • Paying in full, if available

See available motorcycle insurance discounts for options that may apply to your situation.

Are motorcycles expensive to insure?

Motorcycles can often cost less to insure than cars, but there’s no one-size-fits-all rate. What you pay can depend on where you live, your riding history, the motorcycle you own, how you use it, and the coverages and limits you choose.

A lower premium doesn’t always mean a better fit, though. Choosing broader protection, lower deductibles, or optional coverages can raise your premium, but those choices may also offer more protection for your bike and budget if something happens.

What is the cheapest style of motorcycle to insure?

Less expensive, lower horsepower motorcycles—like standard bikes—typically allow for the cheapest insurance premiums. The bike itself is less expensive, and the low horsepower reduces the likelihood of getting in an accident, so it can be considered less of a risk to insurers.

Other types of motorcycles, like sport bikes, tend to be more expensive and higher horsepower, which can lead many insurers to require higher insurance premiums to make up for the higher risk factors.

Motorcycle insurance FAQs

Do I need motorcycle coverage?

Motorcycle insurance requirements vary by state. Review Dairyland’s state motorcycle insurance requirements to see what may apply where you live.

What motorcycle insurance coverages should I consider?

In addition to coverages required by your state, riders often look at collision, comprehensive, guest passenger liability, and optional equipment coverage based on how they use and store their bike.

What is guest passenger liability coverage?

Guest passenger liability provides coverage for medical expenses if your passenger is injured in an at-fault accident. Availability and details can vary by state and policy.

What is a motorcycle insurance deductible?

A deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before certain coverages, such as collision or comprehensive, begin to take effect on a covered claim. Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium, but you’ll pay more out-of-pocket if you file a claim.

What happens if my motorcycle is declared a total loss?

If a motorcycle is declared a total loss after a covered claim, the claim settlement is generally based on the terms of the policy and the value of the bike at the time of loss. Riders with replacement cost coverage may have different protection than riders without it. Coverage details vary, so it’s important to review your policy language.

Should I cancel my motorcycle policy in the winter?

Some riders may still ride during warmer winter days, and some may want to keep certain protections in place while the bike is stored. Before making changes, review your policy carefully.

What happens if my motorcycle is stolen?

If your motorcycle is stolen, start by contacting law enforcement and then notify your insurance provider. Your insurer will guide you through the claims process and advise you on the next steps to take. For more information, see Dairyland's guide on steps to take if your motorcycle is stolen.
